πŸ’Έ Big Tech Is Burning Cash Now

Big Tech earnings are rolling in this week, and the headlines will be full of beats. Ignore them. The number that actually matters is free cash flow, which is the real money left over after a company pays for everything, including its massive AI buildout. On that measure, the picture looks a lot less rosy than any headline, because two of the three cloud giants are set to burn cash chasing the AI dream.

Here is the uncomfortable truth to watch for. These companies are spending staggering sums building AI data centers, and that spending is finally showing up where it hurts. To put the scale in perspective, the biggest tech players combined are on track to spend more than $750 billion on this buildout in 2026, roughly double what they spent the year before. Microsoft $MSFT alone guided for more than $50 billion in capital spending in a single quarter. The question investors keep dodging is simple: when does all this spending actually pay off, and who can afford to keep waiting?

We already got a preview of how nervous the market is. When Meta $META reported last week, it posted its first negative free cash flow since it went public back in 2012, burning through cash as it poured $35 billion into AI. The stock dropped about 7%. That is the mood right now: investors are rewarding spending discipline and punishing anyone who looks like they are spending with no clear payoff in sight.

  • πŸ”₯ Two giants are bleeding. Alphabet $GOOGL and Amazon $AMZN are expected to burn cash for the second and third straight quarters. Their cloud growth looks strong, but the cash is flowing out the door.

  • πŸ’ͺ Microsoft stands alone. Microsoft is expected to still generate more than $8 billion in cash despite its enormous $50 billion-plus spending plan. It may be the one giant still throwing off real money through the buildout.

  • πŸ“Š The growth is real. Wall Street expects cloud revenue to surge, with Google Cloud up about 95%, Azure up about 48%, and AWS up about 38%. Demand is clearly there, but it is expensive to serve.

Here is a fascinating wrinkle that explains why these giants are splitting into haves and have-nots. They are taking very different approaches to the buildout. Microsoft has leaned toward leasing some of its data center capacity, which keeps more cash in its pocket right now. Amazon, on the other hand, is building its own massive facilities from the ground up, which is why its cash flow is getting hammered. Same race, very different strategies, and the market is about to grade them both.

The Munch Take: Here is our blunt take. A beat on earnings per share means almost nothing when a company is torching cash to keep up in the AI race. Growth is wonderful, but growth you have to fund with endless spending is a far riskier bet than the headlines suggest. Investors are being asked to trust a payoff that has not clearly arrived yet, and the Meta reaction shows exactly how thin their patience has become. That is why the free cash flow numbers matter more than any beat this week. Microsoft looks like it could be the healthiest of the bunch, still making real money while it spends heavily. The others are asking you to have faith. Faith is not a financial statement, so watch the cash, not the hype.
