BREAKING NEWS

🍁 The Trade War Just Woke Back Up

Remember the trade war? The one that seemed to fade into background noise months ago? It's back. Yesterday President Trump signed three orders slapping an extra 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods, from wine to dairy to hockey sticks. The White House says Canada has been treating American exports unfairly. Th

e tariffs will take effect in 30 days.

Here's why this matters beyond Canada. For a while, the tariff headlines had gone quiet. Markets stopped pricing in trade drama and moved on. If Trump is willing to hit our closest neighbor this hard, other countries could be next. The trade war isn't over. It just went on break.

For the forex crowd, this is the one to watch. USD/CAD touched 1.40 earlier yesterday, then bounced hard off that level. That's a line traders have been circling for weeks. When a big round number holds like that, it usually means something.

The Munch Take: We still believe in the TACO trade. Trump announces, markets flinch, then everyone calms down and the whole thing gets forgotten. Our guess is that a month from now nobody's talking about Canadian hockey sticks. But put the trade war back on your calendar, because the quiet stretch is officially over. My wife saw the headline and asked if we should stock up on Canadian wine before it gets pricey. I laughed. Then I remembered her grocery instincts have outperformed my trading account all year. We're buying the wine.

πŸ₯— A Parasite Just Wrecked The Salad Stocks

Two salad chains got hit hard yesterday. $SG Sweetgreen fell 6.07% and $CAVA Cava dropped 7.76%. The reason is a word most people can't pronounce: cyclosporiasis. It's a stomach bug you catch from parasites in raw produce. The CDC has traced over 1,600 cases across 34 states, and the source points back to iceberg lettuce from a supplier called Taylor Farms.

Here's the twist. Sweetgreen doesn't even use iceberg lettuce and has posted as much. No cases have been tied to either chain. But when the news is "raw greens might make you sick," investors sell first and read later.

πŸ‚ The Bull Case:

  • 🍽️ These scares usually fade fast. Analysts point to Taco Bell, the chain actually tied to the outbreak, and expect even its sales hit to be short-lived once the headlines pass.

  • βœ… Neither salad chain has been linked to a single case. Sweetgreen doesn't use iceberg lettuce and both chains say they've checked their supply chains.

  • πŸ“ˆ Cava is still growing fast. Revenue jumped 32% last quarter, same-restaurant sales rose almost 10%, and the company raised its full year guidance. This is a real business having a bad news week, not a broken one.

  • Special Report: Prepare for an August 15 market shock coming out of the White House (Via Brownstone Research)

🐻 The Bear Case:

  • πŸ“‰ Both stocks were already sliding before the parasite showed up. Sweetgreen is down more than 70% over the past year and trades near $10, close to record lows. Cava is off about 20% and sits in the low $60s, way below its 2024 high above $150.

  • πŸ₯¬ A salad brand and a food scare mix badly, fair or not. When your whole pitch is fresh raw greens, "parasite in the produce" is the one headline you can't afford.

  • 🍴 Sweetgreen's business was already soft. Same-store sales fell almost 13% last quarter and revenue slipped to $161.5 million. The outbreak lands on a company that was already struggling to get people back through the door.

The Munch Take: A parasite outbreak is a rough headline for a company whose whole pitch is raw vegetables. I told my wife I was worried about the salad stocks. Then she reminded me that she hasn’t seen me eat a salad in our entire marriage. I felt better after that.

Most investors are still crowded into the same mega-cap AI names. But when rates stay higher and headlines stay messy, leadership can shift fast toward the companies actually supplying chips, cloud capacity, and mission-critical data tools.

MARKET OVERVIEW

🍿 Tasty Movers & Shakers

🍿 $AMC AMC Entertainment ripped 24.4% after posting the best earnings in the company's 106-year history. When the meme stock that everyone left for dead prints its best quarter ever, you pay attention. The theater business isn't supposed to have a comeback arc. This one did.

πŸ€– $BABA Alibaba added 4.67% after previewing Qwen 3.8 Max, its new AI model built to go head to head with Anthropic's Fable 5. The AI race isn't just an American story anymore. China's biggest names are shipping models fast.

β‚Ώ $MSTR Strategy climbed 3.13% after buying no Bitcoin last week. Read that again. The company whose entire identity is buying Bitcoin went up by not buying Bitcoin. Markets are strange creatures.

πŸ“‰ $SNEX StoneX Group cratered 31.34% after Jefferies downgraded the financial services firm. The knock wasn't that the business is bad. Jefferies said the opposite, that the stock price already reflects how good the business is. Sometimes doing everything right still isn't enough to move higher.

🧬 $TEM Tempus AI fell 7.74% after announcing a $1.5 billion deal to buy Personalis and expand its cancer diagnostics platform. Investors don't always love it when a company opens its wallet this wide. The market wants the growth, just not the price tag that comes with it.

STOCK OF THE DAY

πŸ’Š Trump Bought This Pharma Stock Days Before It Exploded

A new filing shows President Trump bought stock in $CORT Corcept Therapeutics on March 4th. Three weeks later, on March 25th, the FDA said yes to the company's new drug. It's called Lifyorli. The stock has jumped more than 150% since Trump bought in while the S&P 500 has only moved about 8% in that same time.

What Lifyorli Actually Does: This drug treats a hard kind of ovarian cancer. Doctors give it together with another chemo drug called Abraxane. In trials, patients who took both drugs together lived longer than patients who got chemo alone. It's the first drug of its kind ever approved by the FDA. That matters because itt means Corcept found something nobody else had.

People noticed the timing fast. A president buying a tiny drug stock three weeks before a big approval is the kind of thing that writes its own headline. Nobody can prove it means anything. But nobody can ignore it either.

πŸ‚ The Bull Case:

  • πŸ’Š Lifyorli is approved and already selling. It's the first drug of its kind the FDA has ever cleared and that's a real need with few other options, which usually means real pricing power.

  • πŸ“ˆ Corcept raised its money guidance right after the approval. The company now expects $950 million to $1.05 billion in revenue this year, up from around $761 million last year. That's the kind of jump management doesn't promise unless they see the sales coming.

  • 🎯 The stock is still below its all time high of $117 from March 2025. It trades near $92 now, so there's room to climb if the drug launch keeps going well.

🐻 The Bear Case:

  • πŸš€ A jump this big this fast usually gives some back. The stock is up more than 150% since early March. Moves like that rarely hold every dollar.

  • πŸ“‰ The last earnings report missed on both lines. Corcept lost $0.30 per share when Wall Street expected a loss near $0.14, and revenue came in at $164.9 million against about $186.6 million expected. Launch costs turned the quarter into a $31.8 million loss.

  • πŸ›οΈ Political attention fades. Right now the Trump headline is doing some of the lifting. When that noise dies down, the stock has to trade on sales numbers alone, and the next earnings report lands July 30.

The Munch Take: A president buying a random pharma stock three weeks before it triples is the kind of story that sounds made up until you check the filing yourself. I did. It's real. My wife heard me explaining all this and asked why I bother with research when I could just copy the president's homework. I told her that's not investing. She reminded me that her index fund is up more than my "investing" this year. She has a point.

1 Stock To Own By July 31st (Ad)

Get rid of overpriced AI stocks before a scheduled announcement on July 31st threatens to reshuffle the stock market's winners and losers. Smaller, lesser-known names are now showing the overwhelming potential to dethrone AI's Magnificent 7. On July 31st , this little-known stock in particular could soar while Tesla faceplants.
