9 Stocks I'm watching This Month

Most investors are still crowded into the same mega-cap names. But the next leg may not belong to the household names everyone already owns β€” it may belong to the suppliers, enablers, and software businesses quietly benefiting while Wall Street keeps expanding AI budgets.

Nine of them are in my report this month. Take a look at the list.

BREAKING NEWS

πŸ’‰ This Shot Just Changed Cancer & Moderna's Stock Went Wild

Moderna's stock more than doubled yesterday, its biggest single-day jump ever. The reason is a real medical breakthrough. Moderna and Merck said their personalized cancer shot, given together with Merck's drug Keytruda, hit both of its main goals in a big human trial for melanoma. This is the first time any mRNA cancer shot has ever succeeded in this kind of large, late-stage test.

Here's what makes the shot different. It’s not one shot for everyone. Each patient gets a custom version built from their own tumor, targeting up to 34 markers so the immune system knows exactly what to hunt. Patients get up to nine doses over about a year. The trial included 1,137 people whose melanoma had already been surgically removed. Two out of three patients got the new shot plus Keytruda. The rest got Keytruda alone. The combo did a better job keeping the cancer from coming back or spreading, and the companies called the results statistically significant and clinically meaningful. They did not share the exact numbers behind that yet.

  • 🧬 The trial: Late-stage melanoma patients who already had their cancer removed, testing the personalized shot plus Keytruda against Keytruda alone.

  • πŸ§ͺ The first: The first-ever Phase 3 win for an mRNA cancer shot, and the first to beat Keytruda alone in this setting.

  • πŸ“ˆ The stock move: $MRNA Moderna more than doubled. Merck jumped more than 10%. Both stocks hit new 52-week highs.

  • ⚠️ The catch: No exact numbers released yet, no approval filed yet, and the trial is still tracking long-term survival.

  • πŸ‘€ Bonus Report: Here are the 3 Elon tickers everyone keeps asking about (Ad)

The Munch Take: A stock that more than doubles on a cancer headline is going to pull in every cousin with a brokerage app by lunchtime. The science here is real, and the missing numbers are also real, and both of those things can be true at the same time. My wife asked if we owned any Moderna. I said I was waiting for more data. She said the data was the stock going up 100%. Fair.

What Wall Street does every Friday at 4 PM (Ad)

They go home. The news doesn't.

Every Friday at 4 PM Eastern, the people running billion dollar accounts on Wall Street physically leave the market.

Fund managers, bank traders, analysts. Gone until Monday.

That's not a rumor. It's just how their week works.

Meanwhile, news keeps breaking on hundreds of smaller companies all weekend long, and almost nobody with real institutional money is watching to react to it.

Millionaire trader Tim Sykes calls that gap the Weekend Gap, and it's the entire reason he can place a trade Friday afternoon, close his laptop, and check the result Monday morning.

He just recorded a free video walking through exactly how he trades it.

STORY OF THE DAY

πŸ’΅ The Government Bought Its Own Debt. Bitcoin And Gold Threw A Party.

Here's the simple version of a confusing headline. The U.S. Treasury just said it will double how much of its own old debt it buys back starting in September. In plain terms, the government is buying back its own IOUs with fresh cash. Traders are calling this a "mini money printer" moment, since it works a lot like the government loosening up the money supply, even if it is technically a different tool than the Fed's usual playbook.

The reaction was instant and it spread everywhere. Bond yields dropped, the dollar got weaker, and investors went looking for a new place to put their money. Gold jumped more than 3% to its highest level in over two months. Bitcoin jumped 6%, briefly crossing $70,000 for the first time since early June. Ether and Solana rallied even harder. When the dollar looks weaker and the government looks looser with money, gold and Bitcoin both tend to catch a bid, since investors treat them as backup options outside the regular financial system.

  • πŸ’΅ The move: The Treasury is doubling its debt buybacks, buying more of its own old bonds with fresh cash starting September 9.

  • πŸ“‰ The yields: This came right after 30-year bond yields hit their highest level since 2007. After the news, yields dropped and the dollar weakened.

  • πŸ₯‡ The metal: Gold jumped more than 3%, a two-month high, not an all-time high.

  • πŸͺ™ The coin: Bitcoin jumped 6% and briefly crossed $68,000, its best level in months.

The Munch Take: We’ve been saying for months that we’ve been seeing the best opportunity in several years for both Bitcoin and gold. Yesterday that thesis started to pay off. Hats off to everybody who’s in the same boat as us.

MARKET OVERVIEW

🍿 Tasty Movers & Shakers

πŸ’„ $EL EstΓ©e Lauder jumped 16.30% after a beat and a firmer year-ahead guide. Makeup had a better session than most of the rest of retail.

πŸ’‰ $MRK Merck climbed 12.60% on the same cancer trial news as Moderna, since Keytruda is the other half of the combo. Being the known cancer drug in a first-ever headline still pays.

πŸ’» $MRVL Marvell jumped 9.85% after giving Google the right to buy up to $12 billion of stock tied to custom chips. When Google wants in that badly, the chip stock usually listens.

πŸͺ™ $COIN Coinbase rose 9.55% as Bitcoin crossed $68,000 after the Treasury said it would buy back more of its own old debt. The crypto exchange stock still trades like a lever on the coin.

πŸ›’ $TGT Target gained 4.28% after it beat expectations, raised its year-ahead outlook, and booked $1.65 a share from tariff refunds. The refund helped, but the actual store traffic was real too.

πŸ›‹οΈ $LZB La-Z-Boy sank 16.95% after a miss and a weak sales guide. Recliners apparently don’t get a Treasury buyback.

MARKET NEWS

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ The Canada Deal Went Down To The Wire & It Held

Canada dodged a 50% tariff bomb this week, but just barely. Trump had threatened to slap that tariff on $20 billion of Canadian goods starting Tuesday at midnight. Less than two hours before the deadline, he posted that he was pausing it for three days, saying the two sides had reached a tentative deal.

Yesterday brought the actual terms into view. The U.S. is offering to cut auto tariffs on Canadian vehicles from 25% down to 15%, and steel and aluminum tariffs would get roughly cut in half to 25%. In exchange, Canada is reportedly dropping its retaliatory tariffs and opening up more room for U.S. dairy exports.

Trump called it "a very fair deal for both" sides at the White House Wednesday, while Canadian officials were more careful, saying real progress had been made but key details are still being worked out. Canada sends nearly 72% of its exports to the U.S., so getting this resolved matters a lot more to Ottawa than it does to Washington.

The Munch Take: Threaten the scary number, pause it at the last second, then settle for something smaller. This is basically Trump's whole playbook at this point, and markets have learned to expect it before it even happens. Overall, this should lead to some weakness in USD/CAD.
